Twamen!
Last spring I began working with my church Free Chapel Austin to help them formulate some interactive strategies to raise awareness about their six month old ministry. To say they embraced Social Media would be an understatement! They started a micro-site for their summer sermon series Sex in the Suburbs. The series was focused on the Song of Solomon book and attendees were encouraged to Text or Tweet in questions to our lead pastor which he would then answer, on the fly and without a net!
Let me tell you some of the questions which were submitted I would have to delete from my Twitter time line as they would make my avatar blush! Candor was the order of the day as people will clearly (as we all know) text and Tweet questions they would never raise their hand to ask in real life-in mixed company, in front of their significant other, and in church no less. That’s the point though, people engaged because technology enabled them to-real time.
My pastor Jeremy Self was subsequently interviewed on his use of Social Media in church. Whether you agree or disagree, whether your church is “old school” or progressive and tech savvy-you’d likely agree that engagement in the message is the goal.
My oldest daughter asked me years ago “What does Amen mean?” to which I wrote a blog post on how it means so be it, I agree, or let it be true depending on the translation and the denomination.
In the goofy way we Twittify things by simply placing a Tw in front of any normal word, if you agree with the premise of this post -Social Media can be used to help ministries engage their congregations”- Can I get a Twamen?”
